Paola Zilioli, Soggettività ermafrodita e matrice eterosessuale

Abstract

Il contributo si propone di mettere in luce come l’emersione della soggettività ermafrodita nella letteratura scientifica della seconda metà del XIX secolo abbia contribuito a stabilizzare i confini della soggettività eterosessuale. L’argomentazione si svolge attraverso il dialogo che in Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) Judith Butler instaura con le riflessioni di Michel Foucault su sessualità, verità, soggettività e potere, racchiuse ne La volonté de savoir (1976) e nell’Introduction (1980) al diario dell’ermafrodita francese Herculine Barbin. La soggettività ermafrodita, la cui cancellazione materiale e concettuale sta al cuore della definizione del soggetto moderno in quanto soggetto eterosessuale, ha un alto portato critico, perché mette in crisi il funzionamento dell’eterosessualità, intesa come dispositivo di sessualità, e ne mostra gli effetti nefasti. Il contributo sostiene quindi che essa sia il luogo di una resistenza alla matrice eterosessuale che presiede all’intelligibilità della soggettività moderna.

Abstract (english)

This paper aims to highlight how the emergence of hermaphroditic subjectivity in the scientific literature of the second half of the nineteenth century helped to consolidate the boundaries of heterosexual subjectivity. The argument unfolds through the dialogue that Judith Butler establishes in Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) with Michel Foucault’s reflections on sexuality, truth, subjectivity and power, as set out in La volonté de savoir (1976) and in the Introduction (1980) to the diary of the French hermaphrodite Herculine Barbin. Hermaphroditic subjectivity, whose material and conceptual erasure lies at the heart of the definition of the modern subject as a heterosexual subject, carries significant critical weight, as it challenges the functioning of heterosexuality – understood as a device of sexuality – and reveals its harmful effects. The paper therefore argues that it is the site of resistance to the heterosexual matrix that governs the intelligibility of modern subjectivity.
