Abstract

Abstract (english)

The article reconstructs the genealogy of the modern subject through the metaphor of the Odyssey, understood as the figure of the self’s journey in search of its own identity. The argument begins with the classical tradition and focuses on the decisive transition from Montaigne to Descartes, identifying Blaise Pascal as the turning point that renders every subsequent metaphysical grounding of the subject problematic. The analysis shows that the history of subjectivity does not unfold as a linear development but rather through profound transformations in the meaning of the self.
The core of the article is devoted to Descartes, whose philosophy is interpreted as a response to the fragmentation of the Montaignian self. Through the cogito, Descartes reconstructs the unity of the subject by transforming lived experience into a metaphysical principle of certainty. Yet this refoundation already contains the limitation that Pascal would later expose, namely the impossibility of identifying the self with a self-sufficient substance. The Cartesian self thus appears both abstract and “unfindable”, while the human condition reveals itself instead as one of fragility and finitude.
