Abstract

L’articolo riflette sul significato filosofico e morale del personaggio romanzesco, sostenendo che esso costituisca ancora oggi il centro della narrazione. Superando l’alternativa tra personaggio come funzione testuale e personaggio come imitazione della realtà, esso viene interpretato come uno spazio di costruzione del soggetto morale e di esplorazione del rapporto tra individuo e contesto. Attraverso esempi tratti da Gadda, Levi e, soprattutto, da Le benevole di Jonathan Littell, il saggio mostra come il riconoscimento del lettore anche nei confronti di personaggi moralmente negativi non implichi una giustificazione delle loro azioni, ma rappresenti uno strumento di comprensione critica della fragilità umana. Il romanzo emerge così come un laboratorio etico capace di mettere alla prova la coscienza morale del lettore.

Abstract (english)

The article reflects on the philosophical and moral significance of the novelistic character, arguing that it remains the central element of narrative. Moving beyond the opposition between the character as a textual function and the character as an imitation of reality, it interprets the character as a space for the construction of the moral subject and for the exploration of the relationship between the individual and their social context. Drawing on examples from Gadda, Levi, and, above all, Jonathan Littell's The Kindly Ones, the essay argues that the reader's identification even with morally reprehensible characters does not entail a justification of their actions, but rather provides a means of critically understanding human fragility. The novel thus emerges as an ethical laboratory capable of testing the reader's moral consciousness.
